AC BATCH 96 FUNDRAISER WITH GWENCHA
Assumption College San Lorenzo is a private institution in Manila, Philippines that offers Basic and Higher Education for female students, with the primary objective of creating an “empowered learning community.” Assumption College prides itself in being an institution that develops “women of faith and women of action,” through transformative education. Students are motivated to pursue academic excellence, and at the same time, they are constantly reminded of their social responsibilities. Among its notable alumnae are government leaders, including former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, former Senator and now Congresswoman Loren Legarda, and incumbent Senator Grace Poe. Every year, alumnae of the Assumption College return to their alma mater in a grand homecoming commonly referred to as the Velada. The hosts who are Silver Jubilarians, those celebrating their 25th year after high school , offer charitable donations to benefit the mission schools of Assumption. Mission schools are the institutions run by the Assumption College from underprivileged communities in various parts of the Philippines. With the help of the funds raised at the annual Velada, Assumption College is able to contribute to the physical upkeep of the mission schools, and to provide for their students’ needs, thereby bringing higher-quality education to poverty-stricken areas. This is an essential aspect of every Velada homecoming at the Assumption College, whose foundress, St. Marie Eugenie of Jesus, believed that “to educate is to transform the world.”
As part of Batch 96’s fund raising initiative, we tied up with local artist Charles Gwynneth Icasiano (Gwencha for short) who can create cartoon portraits with a portion of the sales proceeds going to our velada fund. In turn, we also help Gwencha pay for her own tuition fee as she takes on commissioned work to support herself.
Trisha, the cute girl on your left, was recreated based on details that we provided with no particular person in mind. However, the artist can recreate YOU (and your loved ones) as cartoons as well. Wouldn’t it be fun to submit our old school photos and ask Gwencha to recreate it and make it into digital art? Or how about our family portraits? One of our batchmates, Kaye Cariño-Olfindo, commissioned Gwencha for some of her Christmas gifts and here are some of the samples.
